Pregnancy is a time when it is reasonable to ask more questions before booking any kind of care. Acupuncture can be discussed during pregnancy where suitable, but your GP, midwife, obstetrician or maternity care team should guide medical decisions.
This article is general information and does not replace pregnancy care.
When to contact your maternity team first
If something feels urgent, unusual or concerning, it is best to contact your maternity care team before booking acupuncture. This includes symptoms such as:
- bleeding
- severe or one-sided pain
- reduced fetal movement
- fever or feeling acutely unwell
- dizziness, fainting or severe headache
- symptoms your care team has told you to monitor
Once you have been assessed and have appropriate guidance, acupuncture can be discussed as supportive care where suitable.
What to bring to a pregnancy appointment
Bring relevant advice from your GP, midwife, obstetrician or specialist, plus medication details and your questions. Your trimester, pregnancy history, current symptoms, comfort and any complications are important context.
Consent and comfort
Positioning, needle choice and any auxiliary therapies should be explained before care begins. You can ask to change position, avoid a technique or pause treatment at any point.
